Overview
The Llogara Tunnel, stretching 6 kilometers, opened on July 5, 2024. It links the northeastern and southwestern parts of Llogara National Park, significantly improving travel between the Albanian Riviera and Vlora.
Impact on Transport
- Reduced Travel Time: The tunnel slashes travel time between Dukat and Palasë from 30 minutes to just 7 minutes. This makes it easier and faster to access the picturesque coastal area, promoting tourism and local business opportunities.
- Safety: The tunnel includes an emergency escape route and advanced safety features such as lighting, ventilation, fire protection systems, and emergency call systems. This results in safer travel conditions compared to the treacherous mountain roads.
- Economic Growth: Enhanced road infrastructure has stimulated economic activities by attracting more tourists and investors to the area. The tunnel helps unlock the potential of the Albanian Riviera, boosting the local economy.
- Environmental Considerations: Although the construction raised some environmental concerns, efforts have been made to minimize the impact on the park. Mitigation measures are in place to protect the surrounding natural habitats.
The Llogara Tunnel not only provides a crucial transportation link but also paves the way for broader economic development while ensuring the environmental integrity of the national park.
Tips for Visiting Llogara National Park
- Cars Can Get Warm: Be prepared for your car to heat up, especially during warmer months. The driving routes can steeply ascend and descend, causing your vehicle’s engine to work harder. Carry extra water to prevent overheating and ensure your air conditioning is in top shape for a comfortable journey.
- Affordable Food: One of the perks of visiting Llogara National Park is the affordability of food. Local restaurants and eateries offer delicious traditional Albanian cuisine at lower prices compared to coastal tourist spots. Enjoy fresh seafood, hearty meat dishes, and flavorful vegetables without breaking the bank.
- Panoramic Views: The park is famous for its breathtaking panoramic views. As you navigate through the Llogara Pass, you’ll be treated to spectacular scenery of both the mountainous terrain and the Ionian Sea. Make sure to stop at designated viewpoints to take in the stunning landscapes and capture some memorable photos.
